Blue and Wight

Mother's Day is just around the corner and it's time to talk all things floral. I love giving my mum a little treat to thank her for being such an amazing role model (of course I am grateful and appreciative of her the rest of the year, but it's always nice to have an excuse to spoil her!). In this post I've picked out some bits I think my mum would love, and hopefully can inspire you too!

Let's start with this gorgeous set of Emma Bridgewater vases which are so cute! I actually picked these up for my mum's birthday last week and she adored them.

Next up is this little treat from Burt's Bees and a favourite of mine. My mum uses hand cream multiple times per day and this almond milk one is both natural and a skin saviour! It's very thick, smells beautiful and is great for dry hands.

Something that I never really think of as a gift, but makes a perfect one, is tea. Clipper are my favourite brand as they don't bleach their tea bags, plus their packaging is gorgeous! Their Skinnie Mintie Fusion combines caramel and mint and it's perfect for after dinner.

The Body Shop are one of the first places I go for present because they have such a great and varied range of products. Something I'd not noticed before, but instantly picked up when I saw it was this body, room and linen spray in pomegranate and raspberry - yum! It contains essential oils and will be perfect for the spring months.

A brand that is always a safe bet with my mum is Liz Earle. I thought this soothing eye lotion would be a great gift, but there is a huge range of skincare, make up, hair and fragrance products the brand has to offer.

Oh and of course, don't forget a card!

Skincare is not something I really ever spent time over when I was a teenager. My mum used E45 moisturiser and so I followed suit. When I left home for university though and had spare time to wander the aisles of Boots, I really began to test different things out. I started off with a need to cure my immensely dry skin, but once I'd got that sorted, I needed something to stop acne taking over. I found it very difficult to get the right balance and routine, but eventually I got myself there.

I stayed in this routine until a year ago when some ill-health made me question not only the things I was feeding my body, but also everything that came into contact with it. I saved up some money and bought myself a set from Burt's Bees and from this day I haven't looked back!

Natural skincare is now something I feel quite passionately about. I still use some products that aren't completely natural and I'm ok with that, but I now think before I buy a cheap hand cream or lip balm, because who knows what half of those ingredients are?

Since natural skincare is a little thin on the ground still, and I struggled to find any reviews to help me pick what to go for, I thought I would let you know my favourites from the past year.

Lip Balm: Burt's Bees and Lanolips
I am a self-confessed lip balm addict and I always need to have one on me! I also have to have a super moisturising one that really feels like it's doing the job. The best by a mile in my opinion is the ultra conditioning Burt's Bees. It's unscented, ultra-moisturising and a reasonable price. Overnight I like to use Lanolips, which is super thick and really lasts and leaves your lips feeling silky soft in the morning! This is slightly more pricey at £12, but I've been using this since October and am not even half way through yet.

Cleanser: Burt's Bees Deep Cleansing Cream
This cleanser came in my original Burt's Bees sample purchase and I'm very glad it did. It's a cream consistency which makes it lovely and smooth to put on. It lathers up very well on the face, removes any dirt when you wash it off, and it gives your face a refreshing tingle. It's also made with chamomile which is lovely for toning down redness and giving you a fresh face.

Hand Cream: Kind Natured
Hand cream is another thing I can't live without, and I can't stand a sticky consistency! Kind Natured is some of the best I've found. It comes in gorgeous scents like Coconut and Monoi, it's moisturising, it sinks in nice and quickly and it's again a great price.

Serum: Boots Botanics
I picked this up as it was being discontinued and was about £1. Admittedly, I didn't need a serum - I'd never used one before. I find that in the winter months this does me no favours, but in the summer it works wonders for naturally glowy and dewy skin!

Shampoo & Conditioner: The Body Shop Banana
I wasn't sure whether to make this switch with hair care since my hair is hard to tame and when I find something that works, I hold onto it like my life depends on it! I decided to branch out though and went for The Body Shop banana range, which by the way, smells incredible! Not only that, it leaves my hair feeling lovely and soft, more hydrated than other brands and I really would recommend it.

Make Up Remover: Yes to Tomatoes Purifying Micellar Cleansing Water
This is a new product for me which I decided to try after finishing another bottle of Garnier Micellar water. The bottle is great and easy to use with the pump at the top, plus it's fun to shake up and mix the charcoal in. It takes make up off like a dream! Could not recommend this product more. Although it's a little hard to tell what's make up and what's charcoal when you're taking off mascara.

Toner: Pixi Glow Tonic
This is my most recent purchase and one that I can already say will take a permanent position in my skincare routine. It's an amazing way to gently exfoliate your skin and leave it feeling fresh, soft and glowy.

Moisturiser: Sukin and The Body Shop Vitamin C
Moisturiser is something I struggled to find, with brands either being too pricey, or breaking me out. I've finally found a couple that suit my skin-type and are now my holy grails. The Sukin moisturiser is thick, creamy and great for dry skin, while the Body Shop one is lighter, more of a gel texture and something I find useful in the summer months, especially with the zingy vitamin C/orange scent.

Face Mask: The Body Shop Skin Clearing Clay mask
I tend to only use a face mask when my skin gets dry, but I've tried a couple from the Body Shop and neither have disappointed. I have been using the tea tree range for years and find this face mask to be amazing for moisturising your skin, but also for refreshing it with that tingly fresh feeling that tea tree gives. The acai one is perfect for exfoliating and is so fun to put on!

Do you have any natural skincare recommendations?

I began working in October and my office is a 40 minute walk from where I live. I needed something to keep me going on cold, rainy days when the walk felt a million miles further than when the sun was shining. This was when I discovered podcasts.

To me, podcasts are revolutionary, and there are so many great ones out there now. I tend to enjoy the health, wellbeing and sciencey podcasts most, and here's a list of my absolute favourites (in no particular order):

1. Fit and Fearless
I've been following the Girl Gains before they were even the Girl Gains and I adore these three. They are all super inspirational and their stories really resonate with me. Everything they do I'm straight there, so when I found out they were bringing out a podcast I couldn't wait! Every Thursday morning I listen to them discuss health and fitness and I couldn't love it any more. If you are looking for some inspiration and empowerment, this is the podcast for you.

2. The Naked Scientists
The Naked Scientists produce some amazing content, covering a huge array of scientific topics. I'm from a science background, which is why this pod appealed to me, but they really are suitable for anyone. If you want to know why we think puppies are cute, if lobsters feel pain or more about that recent science discovery in the news, you should check this one out.

3. Feel Better, Live More
I first saw Dr Rangan Chatterjee on his TV programme, Doctor in the House, and I've closely followed his work since then. After experiencing a few health issues in the past, I've been a huge advocate for the powers of healthy eating, exercise and relaxation and Dr Chatterjee is a great example of a qualified professional who holds the same mindset. Each week he talks to a guest, discussing health topics with solid scientific backing. It's great if you want to delve into the world of holistic medicine while also knowing the advice is from a reliable source.

4. Talking Tastebuds
I found this podcast after listening to Venetia's interview with Deliciously Ella. Each week, Venetia interviews a familiar face from the fitness, health and wellbeing industry. I'm an avid follower of fitness instagrammers, health documentaries and all things wellbeing, so this podcast really appeals to me! The interviews also help you to really get to know those involved, which I think is nice. Definitely a great lighthearted listen.

5. The Whey Box Podcast
I came across this podcast through one of the hosts, Tally Rye, on her instagram. I adore Tally and all the content she produces - she is brilliant at female empowerment, health, fitness, beauty, and she has such a lovely voice to listen to! The Whey Box podcast also follows the interview structure with health and fitness professionals, which is really enjoyable. They also delve into the stories and personal lives of those being interviewed, and I love hearing the stories of how people like you and I got to where they are today.

What podcasts do you listen to?

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I feel as though I've never really found my 'style'. When you're a kid and you think about being in your 20s you think you'll have life figured out, but here I am, not even on top of my wardrobe yet!

I've fallen in and out of many style phases over the years, often wearing the same things over and over again. So I guess I feel stuck, like I need a wardrobe refresh and like I finally know what I want my style to be.

The only issue is, I can't afford a wardrobe refresh! So I've been saving for a little while and intend to buy a set of key pieces to start a capsule wardrobe. I like simplicity and minimalism, greys, whites, and neutrals with a hint of florals on occasion. I'm all about tan shoes and accessories, brown sunnies and layering up on jewellery.

Now can I justify a shopping spree?!

One of my goals for 2018 is to read at least one book per month. Admittedly this was also a goal for 2017, and not one that I succeeded at. This year however, I have more time for reading. Since I've begun working full time, I find reading a great way to unwind before bed. When I was at uni last year though, I spent so much time reading during the day that the last thing I wanted to do was to do at the end of the day was read!

I also find it difficult to find books that I truly enjoy and look forward to diving into each night. There are several over the years that I have fallen in love with, and millions more that I can barely get started on!

Today I want to share some of my favourite books to hopefully inspire some of you. These aren't really fiction books per se, but they are books that have helped me through some tough times. Anxiety, body dysmorphia, low confidence, insomnia, a debilitating phobia and depression are all battles I've dealt with in recent years, some of which I'm still dealing with today. These books are some of the most useful I have come across in dealing with these issues, and ones that I would highly recommend to anyone, whether suffering or not!

Feel the fear and do it anyway - Susan Jeffers
This book was literally life changing for me. It helped me in ways I never new a book could! This book taught me ways to deal with my anxieties and low levels of confidence, and honestly contains techniques that will stick with me for life. I couldn't recommend this book enough. Whether you feel stuck in a rut with your job, scared to leave your broken relationship, or generally struggling on a daily basis, this book can help you.

Calm: Calm the mind, change the world - Michael Acton Smith
I came across this book nearly 3 years ago now when I began using the Calm app for meditation. This book is a lovely mix of informative reading, beautiful images and work pages. It will take you on a journey to a calmer lifestyle, teaching you ways in which to relax, while also offering opportunities to be creative, such as designing your own perfect island. This book is one that I always return to, as I find the images and the quotes calming in themselves and would thoroughly recommend this to anyone.

The Anxiety Solution: A quieter mind, a calmer you - Chloe Brotheridge
This book was bought for me by my fiance after 6 months of suffering with anxiety and being awake until 3am every night. We read this together and it was a great way for him to learn my thoughts and feelings, while also teaching me to understand why I felt that way. This book will benefit those suffering with anxiety the most, and will help you to understand your feelings as well as ways to combat them. Chloe, who suffered with anxiety herself, writes the book in a sympathetic way, and it's always great to hear from someone who has been through what you are experiencing and come out the other side.

The Book of Joy - Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and Douglas Abrams
This book is a little different to what I normally opt for, but one that I am very glad I took a chance on. It follows a meeting between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu where they discuss what it truly means to be happy. This book is light and will leave you feeling refreshed. It reminds us that we are all the same, no matter what colour, race, age, profession or status level. We all experience the same emotions, and in reality, we all seek true happiness. This book teaches you how to be grateful and how to appreciate life, which I think we could all practice a little more.

The 4 Pillar Plan - Dr Rangan Chatterjee
I read this book in an afternoon! It was brilliant. I've been sucked into the world of health, fitness and wellbeing for several years now and have always been sceptical of books published by those with no qualifications. Of course, we can all tell the story of what benefits us and our own bodies, but I also think it's important to listen to a professional's advice. This books takes you through what Dr Chatterjee considers to be the four most important aspects of health - Food, Movement, Relaxation and Sleep. He covers everything and offers brilliant ways to work towards a healthier lifestyle, even for those like me who think they can't possible squeeze any more vegetables, meditation, exercise of sleep in!

Do any of you have any recommendations?

Yep, that's right, I'm planning my wedding! I'm definitely one of those girls who has dreamt about her wedding day since she was a little girl. Being a Disneyaholic and forever wishing I was a princess, I want my wedding to be as magical as possible. This doesn't necessarily mean spending a ton of money on the day, but rather making it personal and pouring as much love into the planning process as possible.

I've been poring over Pinterest for several months now, saving pretty pictures and ideas to come up with the best day. First thing is first - the dress. This is something I am stuck on, with so many ideas running round in my head, I don't know how I'm ever going to decide on the final piece! I love draped sleeves, wispy materials, floral touches and even a bit of sparkle (if someone could make me a combination of all those, please?). For hair I 100% want a half up/half down style with some flowers and definitely curls (if they will stay in).

I'm super lucky in that my mum used to be a florist, meaning I can be very picky on this front! I'm all about peonies, roses, greenery and super girly flowers. I'm still undecided, but I will be going down the dusky pink/lilac route for sure.

Decoration is another difficult thing to decide. Do you go bohemian, contemporary, traditional or themed? For me it's got to be pretty but equally minimal. Simple table centrepieces, fairy lights and lots of bunting.

CAKE, the most exciting part of a wedding, right? I love naked cakes covered in berries, icing sugar and flowers. They look delicious! Food-wise we are already sorted with a 3-course meal, but that doesn't stop me looking at all the delicious offerings on Pinterest!

My plan for stationary is to make my own, eek. I'm a creative person and love playing around with invitation designs, but this is a huge job. I'm also completely undecided on what I want exactly - I love minimal designs, floral designs, adventure designs and everything in between, so this will most likely be a last minute decision (I'm not good at 'last minute').

My lovely bridesmaids all know who they are now and since there are 4 of them I can live out my colour-scheme dreams of having two in lilac and two in pink. Dusky pastels are just gorgeous and I'm already checking the ASOS bridesmaid section daily!
